Intro: The Song of Roland

Learning Outcomes:

Students will understand the following:

  1. How to work with a variety of historical resources, including literature
  2. How national mythologies are created and what purpose they serve
  3. How the stories we tell about the past reflect the values, beliefs, and concerns of the present

Students will garner:

  1. An appreciation for how literature can shape (or misshape) history
  2. An appreciation for the importance of history and social studies in forming identities
  3. An appreciation of how the boundaries of identity are created and the problems of a rigid understanding of those boundaries
